King of Diamonds


Conscious decisions were made to identify and preserve the basic foundation of the deck. Thus we find the King of Diamonds in profile, as he always is. He is looking to the left and is seen from behind. This was a detail picked up from 15th century renditions of the original Rouen design, where the King is seen in profile holding a poleaxe in his right and gesturing with his left. Somehow through the centuries, the introduction of double ends, this detail became lost. Here, on the other hand, the decline of the English Court Card meets it renaissance. NEXT »
